What Can Go In A Skip?

For the vast majority of home and garden clearances, you’ll find that most of your waste can be put straight into a skip without any issue. However, if you’ll also be clearing out your garden shed or disposing of old building materials, you may need to know the restrictions around “inert” waste. These restrictions are largely due to weight limits placed on machinery and so must be strictly adhered to.

First, let’s discuss the two classes of waste that find their way into a skip.

Mixed Lightweight Waste

The “mixed lightweight” category includes the majority of everyday items related to skip hire for garden waste, such as plants, bushes, grass clippings, bark etc. Also included are household items, such as:

  • Wood, plastics, cardboard and small amounts of plasterboard
  • Furniture, fabrics and carpet
  • Bin bag waste and plastic packaging
  • Empty painting equipment – paint tins, pots, dry brushes and rollers

Inert Heavy Waste

This category relates to heavier materials and is predominantly relevant for building sites and trade-use. The largest skip we supply for “inert” materials is a 6-yard skip (see Choosing Your Skip, below).

Inert materials include:

  • Soil, brick, clay, concrete, sand, ballast, gravel
  • Plaster (no bags or wood/lathes or plasterboard)
  • Metal
  • Ceramic tiles
  • Roof tiles (slate, concrete, clay)
  • Glass (no frames or fittings)
  • Porcelain toilets or sinks (no fitting or taps)

By keeping your garden waste within the “mixed lightweight” category, you have more options in terms of your skip size and can avoid any unexpected fees for misuse.

Garden Waste That Shouldn’t Be Put In A Skip

When booking a skip hire for garden waste, you likely only intend to use it for branches, grass and perhaps the odd bit of rubbish you pull up from your garden, but in reality, this is seldom what happens.

The arrival of a skip is a great trigger to declutter your garage or clear out the loft, not to mention all those neighbours who ask if they can just pop in “one or two bits”. With that in mind, as well as knowing what you can include, it’s worth knowing what you can’t.

Here are the items not permitted within Rabbits Skips of any size:

  • Fridges and freezers
  • TVs and monitors
  • Liquids, including paints, solvents and chemicals
  • Flammable items including gas cylinders, flares or fireworks
  • Asbestos or asbestos-type corrugated sheeting
  • Unwashed chemical containers
  • Clinical or medical waste
  • Tyres
  • Plasterboard

Skip Hire For Garden Waste: Choosing Your Skip

When choosing the right skip for your garden waste, the prime consideration is size. It’s essential to be realistic when deciding how much capacity you need and if in doubt, we suggest overestimating. After all, it’s far more expensive to hire a second skip than to order a larger size the first time around.

It’s also worth noting the content restrictions specific to different sizes of skip, as, while all are suitable for garden waste, only the smaller sizes may be used for “heavy inert” waste such as hardcore and soil.

Below, we provide information for our range of skips, including their approximate size in terms of bags of waste and any relevant restrictions you need to be aware of.
