Residential Skip Hire

How to choose the right size skip for your home renovation project

How to choose the right size skip for your home renovation project

Whether you’re planning a single storey extension, a complete rebuild or something in-between, a skip is an essential piece of kit for most home renovation projects. Your skip should be one of the first pieces of equipment to arrive on site, as it will be needed for when you’re preparing and clearing out your home before any building work gets underway.

There are a number of points to consider when hiring a skip, but Rabbit Group can guide you through sizing, restrictions, and permits. Also consider hippo bags vs skip hire.

The Mini Skip

Rabbit’s 2 cubic yard mini skip is our smallest skip and holds approximately 40 black bags. This mini option is suitable for low volume waste clearance, such as garden waste, so is best for small projects where you’re not clearing out kitchens, walls or other major structures.

The Midi Skip

Our midi skip, a 4 cubic yard skip, holds approximately 80 black bags. Again, this is suitable for low volume waste clearance, such as garden tidy-ups or a small house clearance, but might not be the best option for a major sort out. However, this option can be good where space is restricted and a larger skip cannot be accommodated.

The Builder Skip

For most home renovations, a 6 cubic yard builder skip is sufficient. Holding around 120 black bags, this is a good option for many home renovation projects, including kitchen and bathroom refits or extensions.

The Big Ones

For large scale home renovations or rebuilds, a 10 cubic yard or even a 12 cubic yard skip could be the right option, although these sizes are only suitable for light waste. Soil, bricks and rubble can’t go into one of these large skips so consider a builder skip if you need it for hardcore and other heavy waste. Remember, skips needed to be loaded safely and there are restrictions about what can and can’t go into a skip including paints, solvents, fridges, TVs, monitors and car tyres, as these are products and materials which may be hazardous to people and the environment.
