How to have a Christmas clear out

By the time January rolls around, Christmas decorations are usually packed away for another year and everyday routines start to re-emerge. As the festive sparkle fades, it often reveals something else entirely; the opportunity for a calm, organised and freshly cleaned home.

January is an ideal time for a proper reset. There’s already plenty to deal with after Christmas — recycling cards and wrapping paper, finding homes for new gifts, deciding what to do with unwanted presents and disposing of the Christmas tree. Once you’ve started putting things back in order, it can be surprisingly easy to take things a step further with a clear-out and a deep clean.

De-clutter

After weeks of decorations, extra furniture and festive clutter, many people find decluttering in January genuinely satisfying. Tackling one room at a time helps keep the task manageable. As you go, separate items into what you want to keep, what could be donated or sold, and what needs to be disposed of responsibly.

With so much shopping now done online, households often find themselves left with far more cardboard and packaging than their kerbside recycling can cope with. Rather than making repeated trips to the Household Waste Recycling Centre, hiring a skip can be a simple and efficient way to clear excess packaging, broken items and unwanted clutter in one go.

Deep clean

Once the decorations are down and the clutter cleared, it’s the perfect moment for a thorough clean. January weather often means more dirt and moisture being tracked indoors on shoes and boots, making carpets, rugs and upholstery prime candidates for a refresh.

If you’ve had guests staying over during the festive period, washing throws, duvet covers, cushions and towels can help bring everything back to baseline. For larger items, launderettes and dry cleaners with high-capacity machines can make light work of bulky bedding. Curtains and soft furnishings can also benefit from a clean to remove dust and odours built up over winter.

If part of your January reset involves replacing carpets, curtains or furniture, remember that these items can be placed in a skip if they’re no longer suitable for donation or resale, helping you clear space quickly and responsibly.
