You’ve filled your skip, waved it off, and got your space back – but have you ever wondered what happens next? At Rabbit, we’re proud to do things differently. Over 90% of the waste we collect is recycled or reused, and what can’t be recycled is used to generate renewable energy at our own energy-from-waste facility right here in West Sussex.
Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at the journey your waste takes after it leaves your drive – and why it matters.
1. The journey begins – collection and sorting
Once we collect your skip, it’s taken to our licensed waste transfer station. Here, it’s sorted using a combination of mechanical and manual methods. We separate materials like wood, metal, aggregates, plastics and cardboard to ensure as much as possible is recovered. This initial sorting stage is key to reducing landfill and getting materials back into use.
2. Nothing goes to landfill unless it has to
At Rabbit, we divert over 90 % skip waste from landfill. We recover and repurpose a wide range of materials for recycling or reuse. All biomass waste is processed at our own energy-from-waste plant. Very little ends up in landfill, and that’s exactly how we like it.
3. From waste to watts – energy-from-waste explained
Our energy-from-waste facility turns non-recyclable biomass waste into electricity. The process involves burning the biomass waste at high temperatures in a controlled environment, which produces steam to drive turbines and generate power. That electricity feeds into the local grid – helping to power around 9,000 homes and businesses in West Sussex and beyond. It’s a clean, efficient way to make use of waste that would otherwise sit in the ground.
4. Why this matters – and why most people don’t know
Many people assume skip waste ends up in landfill – but that’s far from the case at Rabbit. Our approach helps reduce carbon emissions, protect the environment, and support the UK’s transition away from fossil fuels. Being open about what happens behind the scenes builds trust, and shows our customers that we take responsibility for the full journey of their waste.
5. What you can do – smarter recycling at home and on site
Want to make your skip go even further? Here are a few tips:
– Avoid bagging recyclable materials – it slows down sorting
– Never put hazardous waste or liquids in a skip
– Ask us if you’re unsure – we’re always happy to advise
Together, we can make sure every skip we collect does more good – for your project, and for the planet.
