RABBIT is a family firm that has been established for 18 years. We run over 30 vehicles from our Head Office / Transfer Station / Recycling Yard in Lancing, West Sussex and our Recycling Yard / Transfer Station in Newhaven, East Sussex. This enables us to offer a skip service from Bognor in the West through to Pevensey in the East and to Crawley in the North.

We operate in both the domestic and commercial markets and offer a full range of container sizes from 2 cubic yard skips up to 40 cubic yard industrial bulk containers. Both yards have weighbridges and we also take trade waste from companies with a waste carrier’s license.

Our business has grown through reliability and attention to customer care, maintaining the advantages that only a family run business can achieve.

95% of our customers waste is stringently sorted and wherever possible recycled. Even with our modern recycling equipment this still results in several lorry loads of waste being sent to landfill each day.
 
Landfill sites in Sussex are an issue, all of the local ones are due to be closed over the next 2 years which will result in all Sussex based firms transporting waste, using large articulated lorries, to dump in sites in neighboring counties – an unpopular move from all angles, not least environmental and cost.

5 years ago we fore-saw the current situation starting and looked to see what alternatives were available to us.
 
Recycling is and continues to be an essential part of every plan but recycling does not hold all the answers and the truth is that the UK is not geared up nor is it prepared to pay the true price for it.
 
Nearly 3 years ago we set off on a complimentary path, which comes to fruition in 2008; that of utilizing waste that cannot be recycled as a fuel to generate electricity. Burning general waste to generate electricity is new to the UK and adopted nationally, could solve a large percentage of the UK power issues. We at Rabbit are the first to do so.
All of the plans have been approved, all consultancy with interested parties gone through and the building of the plant in Lancing is commencing early in 2007 with commissioning early 2008.
 
The Environment Agency monitors every step of the way and stringent controls are employed and will continue 24 x 7 during operation. As you can imagine, the legislation and control over burning waste, never mind as a fuel, is extremely comprehensive and thorough.
 
The plant works by firstly burning the waste (which has been thoroughly screened for suitability and broken up into pieces the size of oranges) to heat water, which in turn drives steam turbines, that generate enough electricity to power over 6,000 homes. The exhaust gases are then filtered and subjected to a secondary burn to completely eliminate any potentially noxious waste gases
 
This is a new and exciting venture for Rabbit and we will continue to seek ways to innovate and demonstrate efficient waste disposal in an as environmentally friendly way as possible in the years to come.
